I think my experience was a combo of luck, timing, communication skills, ability to show that my past professional experiences & skills were transferrable AND valuable, personality, and applying for an opportunity that I was very well qualified for.

Like any position, you earning the gig depends on a variety of factors: experience, your ability to translate PM experience/skills to role requirements other education and cultural fit.

It doesn't demonstrate skillset or expertise and won't land you a job on its own. New employer knows they are going to develop me, and in turn, I will work hard, develop other team members, and work my ass off to show them I am worth the investment.įor people approaching PM from another field or without experience via title, the PMP is a nice to have add on. I have lots of PM experience but not 100% or in title, so I knew I would need a little something extra to show I was committed and motivated. I got my PMP cert to show employers I was serious about making the career transition it is widely respected. Helped that I was an excellent fit for the role and had done lots of that kind of work in previous roles. Just received first PM job this month-first job I applied for. Supervisor was very supportive and knew I wanted to leave to pursue PM (we were both unhappy and honest). They will continue to pay my PMI dues as well. I'm now assisting others with gaining the certificate, and the new company reimbursed me for my PMI membership and exam. My new manager, and one of my former supervisors were like, why'd you bother with the CAPM, you have more than enough for the PMP, so I just got that at the end of August. I actually ended up passing that exam 2 days before starting my current job. I applied to my current position with CAPM in progress, stating I'd have it by July. She was actually angry I started training on my own. I started with a CAPM on my own dime at my last company (really didn't need to bother with it) because my terrible ex-manager claimed I had no skills or experience, and was just downright abusive, unethical, and a liar, for many reasons, not just the PM stuff.
